The interest in gems and minerals in the western North Carolina mountains has spawned one of the country's best-known gem shows, the Mother's Day Gemgoree, and draw thousands annually to Franklin. You could spend all day just looking at all of the different stones. I saw opals in every color. There were hundreds of vendors selling minerals, fossils, meteorites, gems and fine jewelry. It is truly amazing to see how these rocks can be turned in to beautiful jewelry.
